Summer Research Institute

The Summer Research Institute is a vital component of the SIU Carbondale McNair Scholars Program. The Institute promotes research activities that are instrumental in preparing undergraduate students to successfully enter graduate programs.

How does the summer research project help our McNair Scholars?

The summer research project experience is valuable to our McNair Scholars for many reasons. It provides experience in the various aspects of the research process including:

conceptualizing a problem
preparing a proposal
conducting a literature review
designing a research project
gathering data
analyzing data
drawing conclusions based on empirical evidence
reporting results

We are here to help our Scholars

Our scholars develop critical research skills and improve their communication skills by presenting their research results in both written and oral forms.

We’ll even provide our McNair Scholars with some special tools to help them:

University Honors

University Honors Program (UHP) is a university-wide undergraduate program intended to reward SIU's best students for their high academic achievements. We value community, leadership, service, lifelong learning, global awareness and research, and are committed to providing both experience and opportunity to foster those values.

Creative Activities and Resarch Presentations

All students engaged in any type of scholarly activities, research, or creative activities are invited to present a poster sharing their work with the SIU community. After the forum the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor for Research will speak and recognize the top presenters.

Research Enriched Academic Challenge (REACH)

This competitive program, open to all disciplines, offers 20 grant awards each year to undergraduate students working on an independent research and/or creative activity project with a faculty mentor. We also publicize and promote other undergraduate research and/or creative activity opportunities via this web site and by producing an informational brochure.

Labs Within the School of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences

The School of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences offers many great research opportunities covering a wide range of topics. These labs allow students to work alongside faculty members and other research-oriented students to strengthen their research skills. This allows students to gain hands-on experience outside of lectures and required labs. Participating in labs like these offers students the ability to improve their professional development, as well as strengthen their analytical and research collection skills. This is especially helpful for students who plan to attend graduate school or pursue research-oriented careers.
